Join a lively discussion!  Solidarity Stories, a partnership series between the Prince George’s County Office of Human Rights, Mount Rainier Branch Library, and Mixt Food Hall, is a community-led book discussion that meets on the third Tuesday of the month at Mixt Food Hall. This month we are discussing The Deep by Rivers Solomon

Pick up your copy from the library or your favorite independent bookstore and join us for an hour of conversation and good times. Food and drink is available for purchase at Mixt Food Hall so you can make a dinner/evening of it! More information and free registration here:

The story is inspired by a song of the same title by the hip-hop collective Clipping about a fantastical society of merfolk who are the descendants of the pregnant enslaved women thrown overboard by enslavers.

In The Deep, Solomon’s protagonist, Yetu, is the society’s singular historian, tasked with remembering her people’s traumatic past so that her people can live unencumbered by their history. The story explores Yetu’s journey as she tries to escape the burden of carrying her people’s collective past and is torn between serving her own needs and serving her people.

In 2020, this novella won the Lambda Literary Award for best LGBTQ+ Science Fiction, and was nominated for Hugo, Nebula and Locus awards.

Share your thoughts, insights, and personal experiences as we delve into the themes of solidarity and social justice found in our selected books.
